From time to time we get interesting e-mails sent to us from collectors around the world. We thought this one was too good not to share. One of our customers has found a way to improve his health through collecting, and sounds like he has had some fun along the way! This e-mail was received on 2/16/08 and was titled “A Beautiful Trifecta”.
Dear Dave and Adams Card World,
Last year during this time, I had major surgery in order to save my life. After spending a few weeks in the hospital, I got out and began to rehabilitate. I quit smoking ciggarettes and vowed to stay smoke free. To keep my mind off the bad habit I began to collect football cards again, specifically the 2006 NFL rookie class.

Rookie Running Back Adrian Peterson Takes His Game to New Heights in the NFL Pro Bowl and in 2007 SP Authentic Football

The NFL Rookie of the Year is the main target for collectors this season
Carlsbad, CA – (February 11, 2008) – Year in and Year out, the SP Authentic Football product delivers the most sought after, and traditionally some of the most expensive rookie cards in the market. This year is no different. After hitting store shelves last week, collectors are rushing to find the 2007 SP Authentic Rookie Autograph Patch cards of Adrian Peterson.
After such a strong rookie season, and now after collecting MVP honors at the Pro Bowl, these cards are in such high demand, they are selling for between $600-$750 already in the secondary market. Peterson has predicted he will rush for 2,000 yards in 2008 and having won just about every award imaginable in 2007, collectors really feel like Peterson is a great investment.
Peterson is not the only rookie that is creating excitement in 2007 SP Authentic Football. Collectors are after already proven performers like Marshawn Lynch, Patrick Willis, Steve Smith, Ahmad Bradshaw, Kevin Boss, Trent Edwards, Calvin Johnson and Dwayne Bowe coupled with future stars like Kevin Kolb, Brady Quinn, JaMarcus Russell and Ted Ginn Jr. Even though the product has been in the market for less than a week, it is clear that based on its performance already that SP Authentic Football is truly the home of the most collected NFL rookie cards.
Rookies are not the only key driver in 2007 SP Authentic Football. The popular “By The Letter” autograph insert allows collectors the opportunity to try to assemble the nameplate of the player’s last name for stars like Brett Favre, Bo Jackson, Joe Montana, Joe Namath, Dan Marino, Emmitt Smith and many more. The popular Chirography and Sign of the Times autograph inserts return as well. Every autograph is signed on the actual cards and there are multi-signed versions available too, some featuring up to four different players signing on one collectible trading card.
“SP Authentic Football is THE set that every collector saves up for every year,” says Brandon Miller, Upper Deck NFL brand manager. “We receive more calls and e-mails regarding when it will be releasing than any of our other sets. It’s a testament not only to the strong history and collectibility of the set, but also to the fact that collectors know Upper Deck always adds more to it to make sure it’s a hit. With the “By The Letter” set and some of the awesome multi-signed cards available, this year is no different.”
Donruss has announced plans for a follow-up product to its first Americana celebrity-themed card set. Americana Celebrity Cuts will be a super-premium offering. Each pack will contain one autograph or memorabilia card, two commons and one insert or parallel. The base set will consist of 100 cards, with every card serial numbered to 499. Scheduled product release date is April 16th.
Many times we get asked about the largest or most interesting deals that come across our purchasing team. Many people know us as one of the largest sellers of new trading card boxes and cases in the world, but our purchasing team (which is led by Reed) is also very involved in buying vintage products. Our team travels around the country throughout the year buying small and large deals, which can range from some older vintage singles to major purchases of unopened boxes and cases like the story below:

Dave and Adam’s Boosts Inventory With $900,000 Purchase:
In terms of purchasing unopened cases of cards, Dave and Adam’s Card World has just gotten its hands on the equivalent of a royal flush.
Late last month the company wrote a $900,000 check to a father-son collecting team from New Mexico for more than 400 cases of 1970s and 1980s basketball, football and baseball cards, among other things.
“Back in the early 1980s, this gentleman in New Mexico had a friend who told him to buy cases of cards and put them away,” says Adam Martin, co-owner of Dave and Adam’s. “So, he would buy a case a wax, a case of fat packs, a case of racks and he would just put them away. He stopped doing that in 1985, but a friend told him he should buy each Fleer Basketball case to put away. He did, but when Fleer Basketball wasn’t doing well at the time, he severed ties with his adviser, because he felt he got bad advice.”
Included in the purchase are unopened cases of 1986-87, 1987-88 and 1988-89 Fleer Basketball. Or, as Dave and Adam’s is calling it, the “Trinity of Modern Basketball Cards.”
“In terms of 1986-87 Fleer Basketball, we haven’t seen a case in five years, much less bought one,” Martin says. “This gentleman bought 1986-87 Fleer basketball at $10 a box and he sold it to us for $8,300 a box. We paid $100,000 a case.”
The company paid $10,000 a case on 1987-88 and $5,000 a case on 1988-89. Also included were cases of 1977 Topps Baseball and 1984 Topps Football.
“This is the largest purchase we’ve ever made from a collector,” Martin says. “We should make a decent profit on it, but the seller was very savvy. He was very aware and he had done a lot of research. It took us about a month to put this deal to bed.”
Martin says that company officials were initially weary about the collector’s claim of having such a large stock of cases.
“He e-mailed like 40 pictures of this second-story garage he’d built onto his palatial home just to store these cards,” says Reed Kasaoka, head buyer for Dave and Adam’s. “This area was temperature-controlled with carpeted floors and a thumb-print-technology security system. Unreal.”
Although some items from the purchase are reserved for private buyers, Martin said that the baseball and basketball inventory is already up on the company’s Web site, dacardworld.com, and that the football inventory Kasaoka says the majority of the inventory will be for sale on their website, dacardworld.com, sometime during the next week.
“This deal means that a lot of investment-worthy cases that haven’t been seen in the marketplace for years — cases that we frankly thought just may not be available — are available,” Martin says.
